On the other side of the globe, a middle school recently held a poetry competition. This poem was one of the top three in the seventh grade class. These poignant words tell the story of a military child’s sacrifice.

Nine months too long
Letters from Dad
A way to stay strong
A way to remember that he is always there even if he is not
He is there for all things he missed while at war
- First day of kindergarten
- Brother’s birth
- Halloween
- My birthday
- Last day of kindergarten
- First day of first grade
Even if I didn’t see him
He was there
Through the letters from Dad
Sitting on a shelf throughout every move
On a new shelf every few years
Collecting more and more dust but still there,
Still there,
Always
A box full of memories
A box full of tears
A box full of simple yellow paper
And still it is a box that will never be thrown away
I will always hold on
Hold on always to the memories
Letters from Dad.
